The Local AreaSt Bees is a small village (population ~1,800) located on the coastline of the West Cumbria, and is ideally located to act as a base for visitors to the Western Fells - Bassenthwaite, Ennerdale, Wasdale - all being within a short drive from the village. The Roman remains at Ravenglass, Muncaster Castle, L'al Ratty (miniature railway up to Wasdale) are half an hour to the south. The Georgian town of Whitehaven is 10 minutes drive to the north, with the Beacon, harbour area and the Rum Story all well worth a visit. The village itself has much to offer. Apart from the helpful and friendly natives, here you will also find an excellent beach - pebble at high tide, extensive sands at all other times. Several walks will take you through and around the village, and along cliff paths with stunning views. For golfers there is a 9 hole course. And St Bees Priory and its historic displays is well worth a visit. Full information on the village and surrounding area can be found on the St Bees village web site.
